VCCS Guaranteed Admission Agreements

How Does Guaranteed Admission Work?

Virginia Tech maintains several agreements with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) which offer a guaranteed route to admission to students completing transferable associate degrees. There are also additional agreements for students outside of the VCCS or for special programs at certain VCCS sites. The most commonly followed agreements are included and detailed below. Note that all applicants, including those who believe they may qualify for guaranteed admission under any agreement, will apply in the standard transfer application process and must meet all associated deadlines. More information on this process is found on the Transfer Application Checklist. Admission to Virginia Tech is major-specific, and applicants are advised to make sure their associate degree pathway aligns with or includes at a minimum the “Required” prerequisite coursework for their intended program of study, as outlined on the Admissions Transfer Roadmaps. Transfers are no longer admitted to undecided or general programs, and if an applicant does not meet the minimum requirements for admission to the major indicated on the application, they will not be admitted to the university. Final eligibility for guaranteed admission is determined during the application review process.

VCCS College of Engineering Guaranteed Admission Agreement

VCCS students seeking guaranteed admission and planning to apply to any major in the College of Engineering, including Computer Science and Computer Engineering, should follow the College of Engineering Guaranteed Admission Agreement.

Agreement Summary:

Beginning with applications for the Spring 2023 entry term, Virginia Tech moved to a direct admission model for College of Engineering majors. This means eligible transfer students will now apply directly for and be guaranteed admission to their intended College of Engineering major and will not go through the General Engineering process mentioned in the current agreement. This student-friendly adjustment will be codified in future agreement updates.

Beginning with applications for the Spring, Summer, and Fall 2024 entry terms, applicants to the major of Computer Science (only) will be eligible for guaranteed admission via completion of EITHER the applicable VCCS Engineering associate degree from their campus, as outlined, OR the transfer-focused AS: Computer Science degree. This student-friendly adjustment is not codified in the current agreement but will be in future agreement updates.

  • Complete the appropriate VCCS Engineering associate degree offered by your campus, as outlined in the agreement.
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher in your degree program. GPA calculations, including in the case of repeated coursework, will follow VCCS policies. This student-friendly adjustment is not codified in the current agreement but will be in future agreement updates.
