Admissions

An education that crosses disciplinary boundaries

Our graduates learn to apply what they learn in their field to the real world through interdisciplinary research, teacher training, and professional development.

Visit this page for information on how to apply, including an instructional video about the online application process.

Not sure what you need to begin the application process? Visit our Getting Ready to Apply webpage for tips and information.

Admission Deadlines

While you’ll receive your degree from an individual college and department, you’ll submit your application to the Graduate School. Deadlines vary by department, and all students seeking assistantship funding should apply by January 15 for August admission.

GRE Test Scores

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is not a requirement of the Graduate School, but may be required by the program to which you are applying. ETS provides a GRE Fee Reduction Program for individuals with demonstrated financial need and for national programs supporting underrepresented groups. Those who receive a fee voucher also receive free access to some test preparation materials.

International Students

International students make up nearly 40% of our graduate population in Blacksburg and over 30% of the graduate population across all campuses. International students seeking F-1 or J-1 status may apply only to the Blacksburg and Greater Washington DC area campuses and may not enroll in executive master's and virtual programs.  For assistance with immigration questions, contact the Cranwell International Center if applying to the Blacksburg Campus,  our our immigration advisors in the Northern Virginia Graduate Center if applying to the Greater Washington DC area campus. Submit financial and immigration documents after you receive admission into a graduate program.

You'll find a wealth of information in our Data and Reports section, including enrollment, climate survey results, information about assistantships and funding, and what careers graduates of our programs pursue after earning their degrees.

At Virginia Tech, we approach admission from an inclusive, rather than exclusive, perspective.  Using a holistic admissions process, we look at many aspects of each student, including such things as work experience, community involvement and service, leadership, personal and professional ethics, research and scholarship, and the barriers you have dealt with while pursuing your goals.

We are committed to supporting an inclusive, diverse community of students, faculty, and administrators, one in which students can thrive during their education journey, rather than just survive the process.  Through our many programs and resources, we address the importance of nurturing communities across our university filled with a wide range of perspectives.  Visit our Inclusion and Diversity pages to learn more.

Tuition varies by program and campus location, with different rates for Virginia residents and out-of-state students. Visit our tuition and costs page to learn about the cost of graduate education, and our funding page to explore various funding sources available to support graduate students.  Over 70% of our full-time degree-seeking students receive graduate assistantships that cover most or all of their cost of education.

Visit the D.C. Area Hokie One Stop webpage for resources and information about support and services in that region.
