The Southgate Center was constructed in 1987, and an addition was completed in 2002. It was renamed in 2013 to the Public Safety Building.
Formerly home to administrative offices, the Southgate Center is now a public safety building and for the Virginia Tech Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management. It is now called the Public Safety Building. Additional space will be available for "surge space" when academic programs are displaced during future renovation projects.
