Director of Technology Commercialization
As a legal and technical professional with over two decades of experience in intellectual property law and engineering, Jason is responsible for building and managing processes for fostering meaningful working relationships with inventors and industry partners.
Jason joined Virginia Tech after serving as Legal Director and Chief Commercial Counsel for Medtronic’s Biologics business. Jason is a registered U.S. Patent Attorney and has extensive experience across multiple industries advising executive teams in developing, purchasing, in-licensing and out-licensing intellectual property portfolios. Most recently, he led Medtronic’s product development and royalty agreement process for the Restorative Therapies Group, after serving for 6 years as patent counsel for Medtronic’s spine business. Prior to Medtronic, Jason served as intellectual property counsel for IBM’s hardware businesses, where he worked closely with inventors and negotiated intellectual property licenses with various global partners. Jason also worked in private legal practice for where he drafted and prosecuted patents in technology areas ranging from aviation to biologics products while representing various clients, including large state universities.
Before his legal career, Jason helped design and develop interventional cardiology devices as an engineer for Cordis Corporation, and successfully launched a novel cardiac radiation therapy technology for another privately-held medical device firm.
Jason holds a J.D. from the University of Virginia, School of Law and a dual-BSE in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, and Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.
