Andrew Rose

President of OnStar Insurance/Vice President of Global Innovation, General Motors

Class of '97

I have worked for large companies like DuPont, Shell, Capital One, and General Motors — and small ones — most often leading intrapreneurship efforts in an executive capacity. I am currently the president of OnStar Insurance inside of General Motors and serve as the vice president in their Global Innovation group. Outside of work, I am a husband, father, executive, and athlete. I am an avid marathon and triathlon runner having raced all around the world. I have been happily married for 22 years with three children aged 18, 16, and 13. While I started in engineering, my career quickly pivoted after earning my MBA, into financial services.

This excites me the most about the future of my industry...

Data. It will change how every industry works. Get close to and understand your data.

How Virginia Tech equipped me for the "real world"...

Try. The worst you can do is fail. Virginia Tech instilled that in me!

A cause I'm most passionate about...

STEM education for K-12. We need more engineers. I have been involved with FIRST for almost twenty years!

Last book I read...

Iron War by Matt Fitzgerald

Favorite way to end the day...

Talking with my wife.

Words of Encouragement to a current Virginia Tech student...

Ask! The worst you can be told is no in almost every case.

Top of my bucket list...

Finish the six major marathons.

Biggest misconception about my job or industry...

It's boring. Insurance is a fascinating place once you "look under the covers."

The most formative experience I've had...

Running Ironman events. Anything is truly possible.

The last time I ventured out of my comfort zone...

Everyday. If you are not, you are not growing.

My no-fail, go-for-it motivational song...

Enter Sandman. Silly question...

A person who has inspired me...

Henry Engelhardt- genuine, intelligent, inspirational, and kind!

Favorite Virginia Tech tradition...

On campus living. So many great memories!

Best part of being a Virginia Tech alum...

The camaraderie amongst fellow alums! One big family!
