The mission of the Neuroscience degree program is to promote the advancement and integration of knowledge about the brain and nervous system, and how they react to and are affected by the vast milieu of stimuli they encounter. The program will support collaborative work and education of students in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciencessroom and in interactions with researchers and practitioners. The long-term goal is to produce students who will take part in the translation of this new and evolving field of knowledge to improve treatments and cures for disorders and diseases.

The Neuroscience degree draws on faculty and resources from multiple departments within the College of Science including Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, and Statistics. Graduates of this interdisciplinary program will be proficient in integrating molecular, structural, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Through the curriculum and research training, students will become conversant with the theories and methods of molecular, biochemical, and cellular systems as they contribute to the understanding of: anatomical structures, physiological functioning, processing of information, adaptive and maladaptive cognitions/emotions/behaviors, disorders and diseases of the nervous system, and clinical/biomedical applications. This portfolio of skills will ensure that program graduates are highly competitive for the biomedical research employment market in industry and in government, and for graduate degree programs in Neuroscience.
