The department includes two program options.
The Housing option focuses on the residential environment, especially the design, selection, and marketing of residential spaces and products. Graduates of the option are well prepared to become certified kitchen and bath designers, to work in manufacturing and marketing of housing products, such as appliances and home furnishings, and to support residential construction.
Family and Consumer Sciences is interdisciplinary with courses in consumer studies, family finance, housing, apparel, child development, family studies, nutrition, and health. Students who successfully complete the program are eligible for the Career and Technical Education Master’s program at Virginia Tech and will be qualified to teach Family and Consumer Sciences in secondary schools.
