With deep experience in early stage technology commercialization from technical, business and legal perspectives, Mark embraces the entrepreneurial mindset and helps others bridge the gap from discovery to market.
Mark leverages an extensive background in his Launch role. His industry experience spans numerous industries and collaborative technology innovation partnerships. He has experienced exhilaration in building several early stage companies, including growing a medical device startup to a successful IPO. Mark began his career as an engineer in defense electronics and has held legal and executive roles in the medical device industry with companies that include Eli Lilly & Co. and Guidant Corporation.
Mark came to Virginia Tech from the Colorado School of Mines where he held a faculty role and successfully led a campus-wide effort to increase student and faculty entrepreneurship and innovation. He joined Virginia Tech as a Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurship and helped to design and deploy enhanced curriculum in the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Technology (EIT) undergraduate management degree program and the Honors College Calhoun Discovery program.
A registered Patent Attorney, Mark earned his B.S. from Miami University (engineering), a masters from Johns Hopkins (administrative science) and his JD degree from the University of Maryland. A true life-long learner, he is exercising his research skills and working to complete his dissertation for a PhD in Business from Virginia Tech.
