Commencement FAQs

Can I participate in a future commencement ceremony?

Yes, the Class of 2020 is welcome to participate in commencement in December 2020 and May 2021. Details are still being worked out and more information will be shared soon.

How can I access this spring's online ceremony?

Visit vt.edu/commencement after 6:15 p.m. ET and you’ll be able to see the ceremony. The ceremony's videos will not be live, but there will be live features including a chat and a social media wall from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. ET.  Tag your Instagram and Twitter videos and photos with #HokieGrad and use the chat feature on the website to say hello to your graduate and fellow Hokies!

Will graduate names be read during the online  ceremony?

Yes, names will be read. Visit vt.edu/commencement after 6:30 p.m. ET and access the online ceremony. You will be able to navigate the commencement site to hear messages from college deans and listen to names of graduates being read.

Is there a separate online ceremony for the Graduate School?

No, there will be one virtual ceremony celebrating undergraduate and graduate students. The Greater Washington, D.C. metro area Graduate School commencement will also be included in the university’s virtual commencement ceremony.

Will the online ceremony be recorded?

Yes, and a link will be provided to view the virtual ceremony.

I’m an international student who has already gone home. The timing of the online ceremony doesn’t work for me. What are my options?

The virtual ceremony will be recorded and can be viewed at any time.

I’ve purchased my cap and gown, but I’d like to return them. How does that process work?

Caps and gowns can be returned with the cost of shipping deducted for any sealed cap and gown packages. Please make sure the package is sealed or you will not receive your refund. If you purchased a cap and gown online for pickup, please contact the bookstore to process your return. Email is the best way to reach the bookstore.

You can find the complete Hokie Shop return policy online. Customers with specific questions may contact the bookstore by phone, email, or send a message directly from the return policy page.

The University Bookstore can be reached at 540-231-5991 or virginiatech@bkstr.com. The address to ship returns is 115 Kent St., Blacksburg, VA 24061.

Have return guidelines changed?

Yes. We are not accepting regalia that has been open, worn, or visibly used. Due to health concerns, opened regalia will not be accepted. 

How can I purchase graduation regalia?

Regalia is now available for purchase online at vatech.shopoakhalli.com

Hokieshop.com online ordering is closed, but the University Bookstore and Volume Two are open limited hours. Currently, you can still purchase your regalia at both of these locations, but please call prior to visiting as store hours will be updated daily.

How do I get my cords?

Because cords come from the colleges and units, check with them about how they are handling cords. 

How do I purchase honor sashes?

Honor sashes are available at the University Bookstore. If you are in Blacksburg, you can purchase your sash at the bookstore, but call prior to visiting as store hours will be updated daily.

If you need your sash shipped to you, call 540-231-5991 ext. 147 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday to place your order.

The sash is $8, and shipping is $5.

I am graduating with my associate's or bachelor's degree. How will I get my diploma?

All undergraduate diplomas will be mailed to graduating students as soon as possible. Please update your diploma mailing address by following these instructions:

  • Log into HokieSpa: http://hokiespa.vt.edu

  • Go to the HokieSpa Tab

  • Click the Degree Menu

  • Select Undergraduate Student Degree Menu

  • Click Add/Update Diploma Address

  • Click Add/Update

Please allow 10-12 weeks after May 16 to receive your printed diploma. Certified Electronic Diplomas (CeDiploma) may be available prior to receiving your printed diploma. You will be notified via email when your CeDiploma is available to order with instructions on how to order it.  

If you need verification immediately following graduation, you may request a certified letter or order your official transcripts through HokieSpa.

I am graduating with my master’s degree or Ph.D. How will I get my diploma?

All diplomas will be mailed to graduating students as soon as possible. Please update your diploma mailing address by following these instructions:

  • Click the Degree Menu

If you need verification immediately following graduation, you may request a Letter of Completion or order your official transcripts through HokieSpa.

I am a student, and I’d like to attend a different ceremony. Do I need to log onto Hokie Spa and make that change?

No, students do not need to immediately change anything in HokieSpa. At a later date, we will announce details for attending fall 2020 or spring 2021 commencement ceremonies. 

How can I get more details on the celebration planned for seniors on Sept. 26?

We’re excited to celebrate the Class of 2020 during a special weekend in the fall. Details will be shared soon.
